Traffic offences increasing in Latvia

RIGA - The number of people stopped by police for speeding and drunk driving is still increasing, despite attempts to improve Latvian drivers' notoriously dangerous behavior.

According to the statistics of the Road Police, in January-February this year 8,329 drivers have been detained for speeding, up 1,200 on the same period last year.

Police has detained a total of 24,094 drivers for various offences in the first two months of the year, up 3,879 on last year.

In the first two months of this year 1,309 people were detained for driving under the influence of alcohol as compared to 1,289 drivers detained for the same offence last year.

Worst of all, 591 drivers were detained behind the wheel even though they had previously been banned from driving.
