VILNIUS - Information from Statistics Lithuania confirms what shoppers know all too well - that prices are continuing to rise at unsustainable levels despite a predicted economic slowdown.

February's figures reveal that inflation in February 2008 rose by 1.1 percent on January's figure, taking average annual inflation across the psychologically-important 10 percent barrier with room to spare. The headline figure is now 10.8 percent, the highest figure for more than a decade.

Meanwhile, the Bank of Lithuania has issued new 10 litas and 100 litas banknotesof 2007 issue, which contain additional security features.

"The new 10 litas banknotes were printed in Germany, while the 100 litasbanknotes were printed in France. These banknotes contain additionalanti-colour-copiers security features. Banknote restocking is done every fewyears as litas banknotes wear out over time; sometimes they are even torn orotherwise damaged; so we keep replacing such banknotes with the new ones,"Reinoldijus Sarkinas, the governor of the Bank of Lithuania said.

He underlined that 10 litas banknotes of 1997 and 2001 issue and 100 litasbanknotes of 2000 issue which are in circulation shall continue to beaccepted as legal tender.
