RIGA- The Latvian Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins and US Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff in Riga on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding between Latvia and the US to promote visa freedom.

The memorandum is "a document of political intentions" on cooperation between both countries to promote accelerated Latvian accession to the US Visa Waiver Program and to provide equal travel conditions for citizens of both countries.

The document shows the intention of both countries to cooperate in exchanging information about terrorism, migration affairs and exchange of information which will help combat crime. The memorandum also provides for cooperation in the readmitting of persons and furthering programs on flight safety.

The US has signed a similar memorandum with Estonia on Wednesday in Tallinn, as well as with the Czech Republic.

Travel procedures to the US should be simplified by the end of the year.
