VILNIUS - Vilnius City Prosecutor's Office has launched a pretrial investigation over alleged desecration of Lithuania's flag in the city.

Three young Spanish men were due to be punished under the administrative right system, which would have treated the case as a misdemeanor rather than a criminal act. However, a judge of the Third Vilnius District Court has ruled to have all gathered material transferred to the prosecutor's office, which, in turn, launched a pretrial investigation.

If found guilty, the accused face a fine, arrest or imprisonment for up to two years.

The 'flag desecration incident' took place in the center of the capital, in Gediminas avenue around 7:20 a.m. Saturday morning.

The police reports that three men tore down the flag from Bank of Lithuania building after leaving a night club.

A security worker from the bank called the police, who detained the suspects.

The Spanish embassy in Lithuania was informed about the incident.
