Former British PM conferred with Lithuanian award of distinction

VILNIUS - Former Prime Minister of the United KingdomMargaret Thatcher has been conferred with a prestigious Lithuanian nationalaward.

The Grand Cross of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminaswas given to the former prime minister on Feb. 13 by LithuanianPresident Valdas Adamkus.

Thatcher was awarded with the order for merits to Lithuania, as wellas cultivation and support of bipartite relations.

Margaret Thatcher was the first and so far the only female prime minister ofthe United Kingdom, leading the country from 1979 to 1990 and winning threegeneral elections along the way.

The presidential press service announced that Thatcher noted at the ceremonythat she is especially happy over Lithuania's membership in NATO and the European Union(EU) after having suffered so many years of oppression.
