Diena puts its Russian edition to bed for good

RIGA – Latvia's leading national newspaper Diena is dumping its smaller daily Russian-language edition, leaving readers and social critics to determine whether the move is a benchmark of integration or just the economics of journalism.After eight years as a break-even stepsister to Diena's Latvian-language edition, Novy Dyen is scheduled to publish its last edition Dec. 13.Some reprinted articles from Diena and Novy Dyen's weekly Parliament report will appear in the Russian-language daily Chas, one of a half-dozen Russian-language newspapers that competes with the 8,000-reader Novy Dyen.D...
