THE final nails appear to be being driven into the coffin of the proposed sell-off of state telecoms company Lattelecom.

In a radio interview on Jan. 9, Latvian Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis says he would like the state to keep its 51 pct stake in Lattelecom and will ask his ministers to back him in that stance.

"Lattelecom is a stable enterprise, its value keeps growing, the company's management is made of local specialists, so the government could decide against selling the state-owned 51 percent stake in Lattelecom," Godmanis said.

Though the final collapse of the much-trumpeted deal would cast serious doubt over the Latvian government's reliability and competence as a business partner, it would be welcomed by unions who favour remaining under the protection of the state.
