STOCKHOLM -- The Estonian embassy in Stockholm is violating Swedish law by using surveillance cameras to monitor visitors and the area surrounding its premises without obtaining a permit, the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter says.

Of 99 embassies in Stockholm, only 14 have received official permission to install CCTV cameras. According to the newspaper's information, about half of the embassies in the Swedish capital are using surveillance cameras in breach of law.

The paper lists other offenders such as the United States, Serbia, Italy, Saudi Arabia, North Korea, Japan, Iran, Hungary, Turkey, Thailand, Poland, Malaysia, Libya, South Korea and Russia.

The use of surveillance cameras is very strictly regulated by law in Sweden. Among other things, the law dictates that a sign be put up to tell people that they are on camera.
