An Estonian soldier in southern Afghanistan was injured when he stepped on an anti-personnel mine on Oct. 19. The infantryman was flown to the United Kingdom for treatment after the explosion and remains in stable condition. The explosion came as the government coalition parties began debating whether to extend Estonia's international military missions.

The number of homes being repossessed has increased by 10 times this year. The Aripaev newspaper reported that court bailiffs have repossessed a thousand homes in recent months, compared to 100 at the start of the year. Problems were largest with lenders that did not scrutinize their applicants, bailiffs said.

A fight between two Estonian men living in Ireland has left one in hospital and the other in jail. Nikita Zaitsev, a 23-year old Estonian, faced an Irish district court on Oct. 23 charged with assaulting his 35-year old countryman Oleg Korikov, who remains in a critical condition in hospital with a stab wound to his chest.
