VILNIUS 's The Lithuanian capital will find itself the location for the most important debates on the European political agenda Oct. 10-11 when the city hosts the Vilnius Energy Security Conference 2007.

Heads of state and governments, ministers from the Baltic and Black Sea regions, Central Asia, Russia and European states will all attend, as well as representatives of the NATO and EU.

Subtitled 'Responsible Energy for Responsible Partners', the conference will address issues related to global energy security challenges and future guidelines for the EU's external energy policy.

Banging the drum for the conference, President Adamkus said: "The transatlantic energy dialogue, EU energy cooperation with Russia and Caspian and Black Sea regions as well as the development of the Baltic energy strategy will be the core issues for discussion at the conference. We will give the platform to major actors in the energy field for an open debate on a broad range of global and regional energy issues."

According to the president "cooperation in the energy field has become an inseparable part of the European and international political agenda. The international community and our European partners are facing new challenges and opportunities in shaping the global and European energy landscape of the 21st century."

"I am convinced that the best way to address these issues and cope with the existing and forthcoming challenges is international cooperation and engagement based on the principles of mutual confidence and transparency. It is clear that global problems need global solutions," Adamkus writes in his welcome address to conference participants.

A detailed conference program with the lists of speakers and participants and titles of their contributions will be presented closer to the conference date.
