Latvian link to Politkovskaya case

RIGA 's A brother of one of the suspects detained by Russian police for the murder of journalist Anna Politkovskaya is himself awaiting trial in Riga for attempted murder, it has emerged.

Mavsar Isajev, the youngest brother of Ahmed Isajev, is being charged with four counts of attempted murder, the Latvijas Avize newspaper reported Aug. 30.

Russian law enforcement authorities have previously said that the criminal group it arrested this week was connected with assassinations not only in Russia, but Ukraine and Latvia.

Latvian Interior Minister Ivars Godmanis confirmed that two murders in Latvia may be linked to the group.

The newspaper speculates that says that one of these could be the murder of Konstantins Stecjuks and the attempted murders of three other people on January 18, 2007.

Investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya was gunned down outside her Moscow apartment block in October 2006. 10 men have been arrested in Russia in connection with her murder.
