Dozen dead after spate of drownings

RIGA 's As many as 12 people drowned in Latvia last weekend, the national Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed.

High temperatures prompted scores of people across the country to take the water in ponds, rivers and the sea, but a dozen never made the return journey.

The weekend of horrendous loss of life takes the death toll on the water to 120 people for the year so far, including 13 children. In 2006 the total number of deaths for the entire year was 128.
