The international freedom of the press organization Reporters Without Borders has condemned LTV's firing of popular television journalist Arta Giga. They praised the success of the show in exposing political corruption and abuse of authority.

"We are very disturbed by this transfer. It is a disproportionate response to minor offences, one that seems to reflect an underlying desire to restrict investigative journalists' access to popular programmes," said the June 26 statement.

The statement said that the situation was unfortunately not a unique one in Latvia, referring to last year's removal of News Service head Gundars Reders despite his high ratings.
