Almost 20 Lithuanian NGOs have signed a petition to be sent to the European Pariliament regarding the NordStream oil pipeline that is planned through the Baltic, just outside of Lithuanian waters.
The petition requests that the parliament conduct an independent analysis of the possible environmental impact of the pipeline. It raises concerns about chemical weapons and other materials at the bottom of the sea, arguing that the pipeline may "wake the sleeping dragon" by disturbing these munitions.
The petition, which was initiated by the Lithuania's Young Conservative movement, drew more that 17,500 signatures in its two-month campaign.
