In a meeting with U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney, Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga discussed the possibility of lifting the visa requirement for Latvians who want to travel to the States. Cheney told Vike-Freiberga that a US-EU meeting is planned in Washington in April and that the issue will be on the agenda of the talks. The US vice-president voiced hope that the question of the visa regime would be resolved soon. Vike-Freiberga noted that this would be a decision of vital importance showing the US does not divide EU member states in different categories. The two leaders discussed a number of issues at the meeting, including bilateral relations, the EU Neighbourhood policy, energy concerns, and world peacekeeping missions.
