On April 18, Latvian National Police uncovered a illegal warehouse in Talsi containing more than 77,000 packs of cigarettes.
The cigarettes were pre-packaged in such a way that they could be sold in western European markets. During an inspection it was found that the planks of half finished wooden fences were hollow and that cigarette packs were hidden inside.
Five men aged 33-55 and a woman aged 34 were detained at the scene of the offence under suspicion of being involved in the crime; but only one man, aged 33 and suspected to be the organizer of the crime, still remains in detention.
Criminal law provides for a jail sentence of up to five years for this type of offence.
