The Scandinavian aviation group SAS said it was interested in acquiring the Estonian government's 34-percent stake in the national carrier Estonian Air.

SAS already owns 49 percent of the airline, while the remaining portfolio of shares is held by the Cresco investment bank, with 17 percent, and the Estonian state, with 34 percent.

Hans Ollongren, head of public relations in the SAS group, told the Baltic News Service that if the Estonian government decided to sell its holding, the company would certainly be prepared to discuss it. "At the moment we must wait and see," he added.

According to the daily newspaper Postimees, several politicians believe that the state should consider offloading its airline investment as it was not possible for the government to influence the welfare of the company.
