The Lithuanian Christian College in Klaipeda has hired a private security service to protect its foreign students after a racist group assaulted several foreigners a few days ago, reports the Klaipeda daily. A security service vehicle began keeping watch next to the college's dormitory on Kraklu Street last week.

The daily reported that during the recent years a group of young people "fighting for a clean nation without people of other nationalities and races" has taken to brutal action, which culminated in the recent attacks.

The police are investigating four statements from the victims. All of them are foreigners, two of them are black. The LCC's rector has met with Mayor Rimantas Taraskevicius about the matter and asked him to cooperate with the police to tackle this problem.

Foreign students who come to the city are the regular targets of hooligan attacks.

Finding police unable to alleviate the situation, the LCC decided to hire its own security.

The LCC's administration are also urging foreign students who return to the dormitory at night to do so only by way of a main street or take cabs in groups. Local students are also offering to drive home their fellow students who may be the targets of racist attacks.

The LCC currently enrolls 186 exchange students from countries around the world including Kirghizia, Kazakhstan, Thailand, Ghana, Nigeria, Egypt, Ireland, Great Britain and other countries. As of September, the college will be accepting students from Sweden, Africa and Sri Lanka.
