Latvian police make arrest in three-year-old murder case

Police have detained a suspect in connection with the 2004 murder of Ukrainian businessman Olexy Zharov.

The Latvian state police press service reported that a 25 year old man was apprehended on suspicion of being an accomplice to the crime. When police searched his home, they also found marijuana and heroin, and authorities have come to the conclusion that the man was also involved in drug trafficking.

The Organised Crime Enforcement Department is still conducting pre-trail investigations to determine who else may have been involved in the incident.

Zharov was instantly killed when a bomb exploded in his car on Aug.10, 2004. The blast 's which was equivalent to 400 grams of TNT 's also injured both Zharov's bodyguard and a pedestrian.

Under the Latvian Penal Code, murder that has been committed by endangering the lives of several people carries an imprisonment of 10-20 years and police control of up to three years with the seizure of personal property.
