A Latvian citizen was arrested on April 5 as he was trying to smuggle 10,000 cigarettes with Latvian excise labels into Ireland, the press service of the Latvian State Border Guard said.

The arrest came as officers of the criminal investigations unit of Latvian Border Guard, the Interpol Bureau of the Latvian State Police and Irish law enforcement authorities on Tuesday and Wednesday carried out a joint operation aimed at preventing the smuggling of excise goods into Ireland.

Following a tip-off provided by Latvian investigators, Irish law enforcement officers detained a Latvian citizen, aged 40, during the operation.
