European Commission chairman Jose Manuel Barroso said in an April 2 speech that Lithuania could be one of the most advanced countries in the EU 's if it doesn't repeat the mistakes other countries have made.

"I think, and it is not a dream, that you can become one of the most developed states in Europe. The small size is rather an advantage," Barroso said. He added that smaller countries can be more flexible and have more freedom with their economies.

Barroso said that in order to become a idealized success story in the EU, Lithuania would have to be attentive with its structural funds, and to invest them into innovative technologies, to follow open policy and global thinking, to orient into industry spheres that have good exportation potential, and to keep tight fiscal discipline.
