Fishermen banned from ice

After an unseasonably warm winter, fishermen have been ordered to stay off the ice surrounding the Estonian island of Saaremaa.

The county governor of Saaremaa issued an edict prohibiting people from walking or driving on the ice, which has begun to melt and crack. A similar order was made for Lake Peipsi on March 17.

By making the ban, authorities want to avoid launching expensive rescue missions for fishermen who find themselves in difficulty.
