Ventspils city mayor Aivars Lembergs was detained on wednesday while driving along the Kuldiga highway on his way to Riga, reported Diena. Kristine Dulbinska, marketing head of the Ventspils City Council, said the local authority has no official information about the mayor's detention. She said she had enquired about it in the prosecutor's office and the anti-corruption bureau, but received neither confirmation nor denial.
Lembergs is a defendent in an ongoing trial in the Kuldiga district court. He is accused of abuse of power and is scheduled to appear in a court hearing on Thursday after prosecuters asked for a break in the session on Tuesday. According to Diena's report, Lembergs has most likely been taken to Riga for questioning.
