The Latvian environment minister has voiced concerns about the planned German-Russian gas pipeline, saying there had been insufficient analysis of the environmental risks posed to the Baltic Sea.
Raimonds Vejonis said Latvia would be willing to participate in a more detailed study of the natural gas pipeline.
In letters sent to Russian, German, Danish and Swedish institutions, the environment minister said more attention needed to be paid to the pipeline's route, construction, and operation.
"An in-depth analysis of a possible chemical contamination is not sufficient, as the gas pipeline will go through the territories where discovery of buried chemical weapons cannot be ruled out, therefore the report on environmental impact of the project should include all possible solutions and assessment of the impact," wrote Vejonis.
In the opinion of the Latvian environmentalists, the pipeline could pose a risk to fish spawning areas.
