RIGA - A British court has sentenced a Latvian national to seven months in jail for dangerous driving after the man ran over an elderly woman in his car, killing her, the Argus regional newspaper reported.
The accident happened in Bognor, West Sussex, last November, when the 19-year-old Dmitrijs Jasvins drove the wrong way around a roundabout and hit a 77-year-old pedestrian who was attempting to cross the street. The woman died as a result of her injuries at the scene.
The court also banned Jasvins from driving for two years. The man will serve half the sentence, minus the 36 days he has already spent in custody.
Jasvins admitted at the court that after the accident he had stopped only after driving another 500 yards. He claimed that he had been blinded by the sun.
Jasvins, who worked at a biscuit factory, had bought the car only a week before and had not purchased the insurance yet. The man had held a trainee license in Latvia but was banned for speeding for six months.
