Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga said she was confident that none of Latvia's political elite representatives were listed among agents of the former Soviet secret service, the KGB.

Speaking on Latvian public television program De Facto on Nov. 19, Vike-Freiberga said that "currently the politically active people are being inspected before allocating access to the state secrets and I deny such a possibility."

"Meanwhile, among the parliamentary lawmakers there might be secret agents who were not listed in the documents," she said.
Vike-Freiberga said that authorities inspected ministers and state secretaries before they take the positions and obtain access to the secret KGB files.

The president has consistently opposed the public publishing of secret KGB files, which would show the names of those who had assisted the secret service.
