A total of 54 kilos of explosives were found that were hidden in a well at an abandoned farmstead in Priekule, in southwestern Latvia. The explosives were hidden in 18 metal boxes, each containing three kilos of the substance. Investigators presume that the explosives might have remained there from the times of war, but will only be known after testing, the police spokeswoman said. The tests have also been ordered to determine if the substance is TNT or some other explosive. Law enforcement authorities have opened a criminal procedure over illegal possession of explosives. Police found and seized the explosives on Oct. 12 while investigating a tip on potential organized crime activities.
