Zhang Junling is the University of Latvia's only native Chinese teacher. In 2003, the soft spoken woman, who comes from one of China's most southern provinces, Guangdong, applied for a governmental program to teach Chinese abroad. In the end, she was assigned to Latvia, which she hardly knew a thing about "except that it was once part of the Soviet Union." Junling arrived in Riga on a bitterly cold and snowy March day.
