Viktor Uspaskich, former leader of Lithuania's Labor Party wanted by law enforcement agencies, has asked for asylum in Russia. "I have not seen official documents, but I know that the issues concerning him are being tackled in accordance with the Russian Law on Refugees," Vytautas Sviderskis, Uspaskich's lawyer in Lithuania, told BNS on Sept. 18. Uspaskich told national television on Sept. 15, "I have asked for legal assistance for political reasons - the political persecution by Lithuanian law enforcement institutions."
