The man who escaped from a mental hospital in Riga on Aug. 28 has been charged with the theft of a 17th century shotgun from a museum in Liepaja, a police spokeswoman said.
Bogdans Koncevics, 26, has been charged with stealing the shotgun from the museum on New Year's Eve. After the Liepaja court had sentenced him to nine years in jail, he was undergoing an appeal with the Kurzeme District Court.
The gun was stolen on the eve of 2005, when two thieves entered the museum by breaking a window on the ground floor, but the noise was masked by fireworks traditionally fired in Latvia during New Year celebrations.
The gun, made in 1624, is inlaid with ivory.
