Accommodating the masses

ACCOMMODATION IN THE BALTICS: The times have changed.

There was a time not so long ago in the Baltics when a good hotel meant something quite different than what I had grown up with in Canada. Sparse furnishings, poor service and dodgy surroundings often described even the best of places unless you were willing to fork out unrealistic amounts of money on something only a bit better. Boy, have times changed.

These days, a trip out into the countryside will net you some amazing finds. Guesthouses and bed and breakfasts of surprisingly high quality are popping up everywhere. And some more non-traditional places are figuring themselves into the landscape as well.

But whether you choose to trust an establishment rated highly by the likes of Fodor's or Conde Nast or want to try your luck for a night in an old war bunker, the choices available in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are quite impressive. So pack your overnight bag and get out there.

Have fun!
