RIGA - The Latvian Social Democratic Workers Party (LSDSP) will have on its list of candidates for parliament elections also a Labor Party member and sports veteran, the 1968 Olympic champion in javelin throwing Janis Lusis.
Lusis told BNS that he had run for the Riga City Council in municipal elections but agreed to run in the parliament elections on a suggestion by Labor Party leader Aivars Kreituss.

If Lusis was elected to the parliament, he will work on the sports sub-committee because "not everything in this country has been put into order where sports are concerned."

Lusis, 67, won the Olympic gold medal in javelin throwing at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. He has also won Olympic silver and bronze medals. Lusis was among the ten best javelin throwers in the world from 1953 to 1970. At present he is advising his son Voldemars Lusis, a member of the Latvian Olympic team.
