Just as The Baltic Times was going to press, Lithuanians learned that coalition talks between the Homeland Union (Conservatives) and the Social Democrats broke down. Few were surprised. Bad blood runs deep between the stalwarts of Lithuania's traditional right- and left-wing forces (there is enough resentment between them to fill a large lake), yet President Valdas Adamkus, pointing to Germany as an example, had been holding out for a broad-based agreement that would keep the country's fractured political arena together until parliamentary elections in 2008.
