RIGA - Rescuers have abandoned their search for the crew member missing from a Latvian motor yacht that became stranded off the coast of Denmark on Sunday.
The Danish rescue service found the Latvian yacht Zhenia, which had run aground en route to Norway in poor conditions. Its sole crew member could not be found.
A search was mounted utilizing two helicopters and seven boats, but the rescue effort was abandoned at 2am.
A Latvian Navy spokeswoman told the Baltic News Service that there was no hope for the lost sailor.
"They (the Danish rescue teams) had searched sufficiently large area but only found a life buoy. At the given weather conditions and water temperature, a person cannot survive," the spokeswoman said.
