RIGA - Former transport minister Ainars Slesers has been elected the new chairman of Latvia's First Party.
Slesers won a majority of vote at a party congress in Riga on May 27. He selected Children and Family Affairs Minister Ainars Bastiks, Interior Minister Dzintars Jaundzeikars and former party chairman Juris Lujans as his deputies. Bastiks was also nominated for the post of party chairman but withdrew, making Slesers the sole candidate.
The vacancy was created when former chairman Juris Lujans announced his decision to step down and leave active politics.
