RIGA-The Dutch have named a new breed of tulip after Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga, the presidential press service reported.
The new tulip will be officially dubbed "Vaira" in the Riga Castle today, just a week before Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands is expected to visit Latvia.
The scientists who created the new breed decided to name the tulip after the Latvian president in appreciation her achievements, along with the Latvian people, in restoring and strengthening democracy.
Other tulip breeds carry the names of Queen Beatrix, Queen Elizabeth, Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yushchenko and other prominent personalities.
