Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga is satisfied with the national team's performance during the IHWC 2006, which is underway in Riga, Baltic News Service reported. "Our team fulfilled its responsibilities honorably," the president told the press after the meeting with Latvian Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis on May 17.

"The fact that the Latvian national team plays in the top league is an achievement in itself," Vike-Freiberga added.

The president, who personally attended several games of the championship games said that it had been exciting and spectators had been in raptures. Only the game with Canada, which the Latvians lost with 0:11, caused very unpleasant feelings to Latvian ice-hockey fans.
"I'm glad that I was spared the pangs during the game with Canada," said the Latvian president, who did not attend that game, adding that the actions of referees during the game had been shocking.

In her speech addressed to Latvian National Team, Vike-Freiberga thanked the team members, its head coach and his assistants for unforgettable moments during their games.
"These moments were sometimes sad, sometimes very exciting, but never boring," president outlined. "And I thank you for that with all my heart!"
