Foreigners visiting Riga for the 2006 World Ice Hockey Championships have found themselves arrested and robbed during the past week of revelry.
Police have reported an increase in the number of foreigners transported to the sobering house after being arrested for drunken behavior.
An increased police presence on city streets led to a total of 39 locals and foreigners being fined for various offences, most of them for illegally consuming alcohol in a public place.
Others also found themselves the victims of thieves who have taken advantage of the influx of tourists. Police said a Czech citizen had a mobile phone stolen from a car, a Finnish national had a digital camera taken from a restaurant, while an Italian man had his passport and money stolen from his hotel room.
