Vaira Vike-Freiberga was scheduled to meet U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Wednesday during the final day of the Latvian president's lengthy visit to the United States.

As Vike-Freiberga is an official appointee on overseeing reforms at the United Nations, the two will discuss possible changes in the international organization.

At the same time there has been much speculation that Vike-Freiberga is a possible candidate to replace Annan, whose term expires this year. The U.S. administration has hinted that it would support the Latvian president's candidacy.
