Chechens quietly remember mass deportations

RFE/RL - Russia honored soldiers and veterans with countrywide rallies and commemorative events on Defenders of the Fatherland Day. But amid the festivities, many remembered the tragedy that unfolded 62 years ago in the north Caucasus. On Feb. 23 's 24, 1944, almost half a million Chechens and Ingush were brutally deported to Central Asia on the orders of Josef Stalin. Thousands of Russian officers and veterans took part in the numerous commemorative ceremonies that were held today across the country.
