TALLINN 's Estonia's Justice Minister Rain Lang admitted that existing punishments have not helped to reduce drunk driving and therefore the government should consider the confiscation of drunk drivers' vehicles.
"Today's practice unfortunately shows that the fear of criminal punishment is not enough for people not to drive when drunk," he stated.
According to the minister confiscation of culprits' vehicles is the only way to combat drunk driving.
In his opinion, a fine for drunk driving can be substituted with a short-time arrest is unreasonable because a driver, who chooses to spend his weekend in jail, is getting three meals a day at the state's expense and does not pay a penny into state coffers.
