RIGA -- The Latvian ambassador to the United States, Maris Riekstins, said he would join the ruling People's Party, marking the first time in his life he has joined any political party.
Riekstins made clear that he did not wish to run in parliamentary elections or obtain a higher office. Under law, he would be required to resign from his ambassadorship if he tried to take such an office.
The People's Party, Riekstins told the BNS, had approached him about joining the party.
