RFE/RL - Amid the confusion of the recent deal struck between Russia and Ukraine over the supply of gas, one thing remains clear: Although, as the world's main producer of gas, Russia wields immense power, it cannot ride roughshod over the wishes of its consumers. Ukraine forced Russia to compromise with a recent deal between the two countries. And it managed to do so primarily because the pipeline that supplies 90 percent of Russia's gas to Western Europe runs through Ukrainian territory.
