Presidential honor

Wong Kar Wai has been named president of the jury for this year's Cannes film festival, the first Chinese person to be given the honor in the history of the world's most famous film festival.

The Shanghai-born director's "Happy Together" won him the best director award at the 1997 festival and "In the Mood for Love" was nominated for the Palme d'Or in 2000. Last year, the honor fell to Sarajevo-born director Emir Kusturica, who awarded the Palme d'Or to the Belgian drama "L'Enfant" (The Child), by the Dardennes brothers. The 59th Cannes film festival will take place May 17 's 28.
