RIGA 's Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga told a Russian paper that Latvia had no territorial claims on Russia and that the border agreement between the two countries may be signed as early as next spring.
She said Latvia had no intention to claim ownership of the Pitalova district in Russia, which prior to World War II had been part of Latvian territory.
"If we could sign and ratify the current draft of border treaty, [Pitalova] would remain so, as Latvia does not claim to regain the region," she said, adding that the signing of a new treaty could take place during the visit of Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis in Moscow in the spring.
