VILNIUS 's The Lithuanian Supreme Court acquitted former president Rolandas Paksas on Dec. 13, although it did not overrule impeachment, Lithuania's parliamentary speaker said.

"Impeachment is a political decision, which has been made, and all what is related with cases, what is going on in courts is prosecution. These are two different things and two different liabilities. Maybe they have something in common but are not closely related," the parliamentary speaker said in an interview with Ziniu Radijas radio.

An expanded seven-judge panel cleared Paksas on Dec. 13, who had been ousted from the post of president for violating the Constitution. He was accused of revealing a state secret.

The Supreme Court's ruling is final and not subject to appeal.
