Actor Pat Morita, best known for his role as the wise, witty mentor in "The Karate Kid" died at the age of 73.

The 1984 blockbuster brought Morita an Oscar nomination and led to three sequels. The actor was born to a family of migrant fruit pickers in California, and spent WWII in a Japanese-American internment camp. With his acclaimed performance as Kesuke Miyagi in the "Karate Kid" pictures, Morita overcame a career fraught by racial stereotyping.
