VILNIUS - A conference between the International Lesbian and Gay Association's European region will be held in Vilnius in 2007, association officials decided at a conference in Paris last weekend.

The Lithuanian Gay League was up against an Austrian gay and lesbian organization to host the association's 31st annual conference. Recent outbreaks of intolerance against gays in the Baltic states and Poland motivated delegates to vote for Vilnius, the Lithuanian Gay League reported.

Sexual minority parades held in Latvia and Estonia earlier this year were strongly opposed by the public. A protest against possible gay parades in Lithuania and the spread of homosexuality was held in Vilnius in late September.

The European Commission has announced 2007 as the year of equal opportunities.
