Kremlin-backed English-language news channel prepares for launch

Russia Today, a 24-hour English satellite TV channel, failed to meet its launch date last week, as the station's managers tried to put a brave face on an otherwise uncanny Kremlin venture. "Today [Sept. 15] we're beginning the technical broadcast, but we don't want to give a definite date for the full launch now because of problems we may still encounter," news editor Margarita Simonyan was quoted as saying last week.
