RIGA 's Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis has asked Transport Minister Ainars Slesers for an explanation as to why state money was spent on signs that promote the minister's personal image.

Arno Pjatkins, a spokesman for Kalvitis, said the prime minister wanted an explanation by Sept. 20 as to why signs were placed on roads under repair reading, "This public highway is under repair. We apologize for temporary inconvenience. On behalf of the Transport Ministry 's A.Slesers."

The prime minister "doesn't really understand the purpose for putting up those signs," said Pjatkins.

The signs reportedly cost some 24,000 lats (34,000 euros) from the state budget.
